Sustainable Housing Initiative
BUILDING FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Discover a community-driven housing initiative focused on sustainable homes, local training opportunities, and long-term housing solutions for Kanehsatà:ke.
BUILDING BETTER HOUSING IN KANEHSATÀ:KE
” What if the next homes built in Kanehsatà:ke were not only eco-friendly and long-lasting, but built by our own people, students and workers trained right here at home? More than a simple construction project, this is a chance to build homes that are long-lasting, environmentally friendly, and resilient to damage, while reflecting our culture, values, and needs.”
Kanehsatà:ke’s housing stock is aging and faces serious issues: mold, structural deterioration, leaky roofs, and more – making maintenance costs unsustainable. To develop new housing that fits the community’s needs and vision, this pilot project looked at prioritizing sustainability, capacity building, long-term durability, and reduced upkeep.
Training
This pilot project integrates a training and certification component, with the intent of having community members trained and hired on the project, so that these homes and future homes in Kanehsatà:ke are built for:
- Specialized construction AEP
- Retroactive Red Seal credits
- Compensated on-the-job training
